What To Expect During an Emissions Test

The annual emissions test for Texas drivers is like a physical for your vehicle’s emissions system. At our auto repair shop, we have a checklist of items to ensure your car is in compliance with regulations. Depending on your vehicle’s make/model/year, you will need to pass the test to renew your registration.

Your vehicle’s engine releases a lot of byproducts from combustion. The exhaust system is in charge of transforming these gasses and releasing them into the atmosphere. Unfortunately, if the amount of emissions isn’t regulated, our air quality and environment can have damaging effects.

When you bring your car in for an emissions test, one of our technicians will physically inspect your exhaust system. Then, we will hook your car to a testing machine. The equipment will measure the level of pollutants that your car emits, such as hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, and more.

If you pass the test – congratulations! You are good to have your vehicle’s registration renewed. However, if you fail the smog test, you will be given a full report and explanation of what went wrong and what repairs you need to fix it. You must get the repairs and retest to legally drive your vehicle.
