We offer the following diesel engine diagnostic and repair services at our locations:

Excessive Smoke Diagnostic & Repair

If your diesel engine’s emitting excessive smoke, we can figure out why. Our technicians are experts at diagnosing common diesel engine problems like this and will start by checking the state of your engine oil and how well the fuel’s burning. We understand the relationship between the engine problem and the color of the smoke it’s emitting. With this knowledge and expertise, we can identify the problem and perform the appropriate service to remedy the issue.

Excessive Noise Diagnostic & Repair

Diesel engines are known for their roar. But, when one starts making excessive or abnormal noise, it’s important to quickly diagnose and fix the problem. If this is happening with your diesel vehicle, bring it in as soon as possible. We can pinpoint the cause, perform the necessary repairs, and prevent future noise issues from happening again. Quickly identifying a faulty part will help prevent further damage to other engine components, saving you more time and money.

Hard-Starting Engine Diagnostic & Repair

If your diesel engine has become more difficult to start, bring it in, and one of our experts in diesel truck repair can check and see exactly what’s going on. A hard-starting engine can be caused by a variety of things, so we’ll carefully look over the many diesel engine components and systems and help pinpoint the cause. If you know or suspect the source of the problem, we can provide expert verification and then perform the necessary diesel engine repair service.

Glow Plug Replacement

Over time, your diesel engine’s glow plugs will wear out from use and need to be replaced. Without a functioning glow plug, which is a vital component for engine operation, the engine won’t be able to properly ignite the fuel in the combustion chamber. This can lead to improper idling and smoke emissions. If it’s time to replace your glow plugs, bring your vehicle to your closest McSpadden’s Tire & Automotive location; we can put in new glow plugs and get you back on the road.

Turbocharger Repair

When your engine’s turbocharger needs maintenance, you may notice a strong smell of burning oil, a whining sound that gets louder at boost, a noticeable decrease in power, or excessive exhaust smoke. Also, your turbocharger can fail if it does not have enough lubrication. Improper lubrication can cause carbon buildup, which can allow small pieces of debris to get into the turbocharger and damage the internal components.

Bring your vehicle to our expert technicians if your diesel engine’s turbocharger is acting strange. We can determine what’s going on, perform the turbocharger maintenance or repair that’s needed, and prevent further damage.

Keep Your Fleet of Diesel Vehicles in Top Condition

To help keep your business’s vehicles on the road, we offer fleet diesel repair and maintenance services as well. If you need any type of fleet services, just give us a call and we can talk about how we can help.

We’re Here for You When Your Diesel Vehicle Needs a Tow

How Exactly Do Diesel Engines Work?

Diesel engines are built with durability, reliability, and power in mind. They are designed to ignite fuel using their own compression. In this engine system, the intake air is compressed at a very high compression ratio, which introduces a great amount of heat. The compression rate in a diesel engine is more than three times higher than in a regular gasoline engine.

After the air compression, fuel is injected directly into the cylinder and the fuel vapor is ignited. Unlike gas engines that rely on spark plugs for ignition, diesel engines use glow plugs. These glow plugs electrify the heating element and cause it to emit visible light (hence the name). The fuel injector then sprays fuel onto the hot tip of the glow plug for ignition. Glow plugs use two heating elements to quickly get very hot for fast starts.

Some diesel engines also have a turbocharger system. Turbochargers quickly compress the air flowing into the engine, allowing more air to flow into the chamber and increasing the compression ignition. A turbocharger uses the exhaust gas to spin a turbine that drives an air compressor. This compressor then pushes extra air into the cylinders. When there’s more air in the combustion chamber, more fuel can be added to the process. So, turbochargers provide diesel engines with more power, increased efficiency, and better fuel mileage.

Signs That Your Engine Needs a Diesel Mechanic:

Your diesel engine plays a critical role in the operation of your vehicle. So it’s especially important that you’re aware of indicators of an issue and seek repairs at a diesel mechanic shop right away. There are several red flags you can watch out for that indicate your diesel engine may need service, including:

Difficulty Starting

Have you recently noticed that your engine’s struggling to start when you turn the ignition? It may be a problem within the compression system. When a compression component gives out, it can often prevent the engine from starting properly. Inspecting and diagnosing the engine’s compression system is a quick test that any good diesel mechanic can do.

Blue Smoke

If you see bluish smoke coming from the exhaust pipe or from under your hood, this isn’t normal. This is often an indicator that the engine’s burning its own oil because it’s too hot. It can also be caused by a leak from a worn oil chamber.

Knocking Sounds

A fairly loud roar is normal for a diesel engine, but it shouldn’t be making loud knocking sounds. If it is, this is an indicator of a bad engine component(s). If this is happening, bring your vehicle in for inspection and service immediately.

If you have noticed any of the above indicators, get your vehicle to your closest McSpadden’s Tire & Automotive location as soon as you can. The sooner the problem’s addressed, the better. Doing so will help prevent further costly damage to your diesel engine and get your vehicle back on the road quicker in optimal running condition.
